A one day workshop on Gouache
Available spots
What's This?
Join local legend Lucy He as she breaks down the materials, technique and style of her gouache paintings. Lucy will explain the materials, including what paint, which brushes, and paper. She will do a live demonstration explaining her thought process and technique and addressing any challenges. She will give 1 on 1 feedback with the class. Students will focus on painting from simple still life references - to maximize learning from painting with the medium. Basic painting experience in general is recommended. Intermediate and advanced painters are welcome to bring their own references if higher complexity is desired. Depending on existing experience, students may complete anywhere from 1-3 small paintings by the end. There will be a noon lunch break, you can bring your own meal or partake in the lunch group order. —----------- Materials Recommended A minimalist BYO supply list for the smoothest experience: ++ A basic set of 3-4 water-based tube gouache paints (Holbein or Windsor & Newton, not Acryla which is plastic) Limited palette colors: Cyan / Magenta / Yellow AND OR Red / Ultramarine Blue / Yellow. The more color options the better. CMY is recommended over RBY. Basic white gouache is also recommended. A yellow watercolor tube can work too, or if you already have backup watercolor tubes in general it's a helpful supplement. ++ Basic set of synthetic watercolor brushes (flat square tips & rounds, 1in, 1/2in, 1/4in - a mix in this spectrum, we’ll be painting on the smaller side) ++ Fine mist spray bottle with water - can find in drugstores or grocery as a travel sized item ++ Cup or water container of some kind for cleaning brushes If you have your own basic painting setup already that would be welcome! —----------- Materials provided by workshop: Watercolor Paper, Palette Paper, Cardboard backings (for papers), Blue tape Additional brushes, limited in capacity Some gouache paints provided - Can supplement paints in a limited capacity Titanium white or some of the other basic colors, ideally bring your own for the smoothest workshop experience and make the most of your time Watercolor tube paints & blending medium Toothpicks / Cotton Swabs, Paper Towels, Hard Pencils (H,2H), erasers A full recommended materials list will be provided for registered students to build their own kit.
